Depression
17 million adults and 12 million adolescents suffer from various types of depression in the US. Patients typically suffer from low mood or mood swings, low self-esteem and loss or lack of interest in normal, enjoyable activities.
Typical anti-depressant treatments include benzodiazepines, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, monoamine reuptake inhibitors, often in conjunction with counseling or psychotherapy. However, these treatments are not always effective. Furthermore, they are often not well tolerated due to a host of adverse central and peripheral side effects.
Our approach focuses on a novel implantable drug delivery system designed to circumvent the peripherally mediated adverse effects. We are currently developing the prototype devices for pre-clinical evaluation.
